If you haven’t already been notified in the software, its time to check for updates again!
The team have been hard at work preparing iMindMap 5.2 and it has very recently gone out via the update system (read our How-To-Guide on Updates to find out how to download this). We are excited to announce this update features the following:
Huge amount of 5.2 development effort went into allowing you to create and use custom Styles in your Mind Maps. In iMindMap V4 we had some basic AutoMap options, which looked like this…
Now you get this (shown within Mac):
If you are a Windows user, you get a familiar ribbon interface to this:
AutoMap in V4 allowed users to create a set of default fonts and colours, Custom Styles in iMindMap 5 is a huge leap forward in flexibility. Why not watch our video on this so that you can see it in action!
Firstly, you can define as many Custom Styles as you want and change between them quickly, so if you want to brainstorm in one style and present in another its just a single click away!
Secondly, you can define and save the 4 key parts (branch colour / font / graphics / layout) that make up a Style and use them independently. So for example if you like your current layout but want a new colour scheme you can just swap the colours, if you like the colours but feel you need a new graphics setup that’s just a click away. Exploring the 4 Style parts:
Define the 8 default branch colours, text colour, boundary fill and boundary line colours. We are shipping with 43 default palettes created by our graphics team (they of course look really nice!) but you can also make as many as you want, to fit exactly what you think looks nice; or maybe even one to fit to your company colours.
Define 8 fonts used on your branches, from level 1 (from the central idea) to level 8. There’s 26 default font sets shipped, but if you want all your second level branches bold, or tiny text on level 1 branches, then this where you can achieve that.
Graphic options are pretty sophisticated, they allow you to tweak and perfect how your Mind Map looks to achieve very powerful results. You can adjust shadows, branch thickness, arrow styles, boundary shapes, sizes and padding. Graphics options can make a huge impact on your maps.
SmartLayout is a very powerful tool, it shapes the branches as you create them (by keyboard or hand) and keeps your maps organised and at lightning speed (a massive technological advance in comparison to iMindMap V4’s speed mind mapping). You can save layout options by editing them from the Styles menu to quickly reshape your Mind Maps.
Finally iMindMap 5.2 will allow you to collect a single option from each of the 4 Style parts and save it as your own Style, for quick access in the visual drop down menu. A quick calculation of the Style options we ship with means you already have access to 125,216 combinations, but now you can create lots more of your own. To show the power of Styles here is one of our template maps with 2 different styles applied:
Custom Styles allow one click changes to make huge effects on your Mind Maps! Why not watch our video on this so that you can see it in action!
iMindMap 5.2 features an enhanced permissions system to deal with the new OS X Lion operating system. The first time you run iMindMap on OS X Lion you will get a pop up asking for your users password, this is used by the operating system to allow iMindMap to set permissions on its own data folder. You will notice that the Lion interface features the new scroll bars, buttons, etc that are a part of the new look for OS X Lion.
Note that Lion does not appear to ship with Java at this time, therefore you will be prompted the first time you run any Java application that you do not have Java. If you click Ok at this prompt OS X will download and install Java for you, then you can continue to use iMindMap.
iMindMap Online has been updated to support the sync and editing of custom themed files, whilst the online editor is a lighter version of iMindMap, as such you can’t create custom styles, it will still respect whatever Style you have currently applied to the map.
5.2 also addresses a number of issues some customers have been experiencing, this includes:
We hope you enjoy iMindMap 5.2, we really feel the custom styles will allow you to create some amazing iMindMaps. If you have created one you are really proud of and would like to share why not tweet us? Or upload it to Biggerplate? You never know we may ask if we can ship it as a default in the future 😉
